The A.L. Fortune Falcons went 2-3 and gave up only six goals while finishing 13th in the B.C. Senior A Boys Soccer Championships in Kamloops .
St. Andrew’s Saints of Victoria won the 16-team tournament over Mulgrave Titans of West Vancouver. Girodano DePoalis of the Saints won the Golden Boot Trophy with eight goals, while teammate Leo Falzon was chosen MVP.
After a close 2-0 loss to Fraser Valley champion Southridge Storm, the Falcons then put together another solid showing in a 2-0 loss to West Point Grey Greyhounds Academy of Vancouver.
The Falcons’ biggest game of the tourney came early Friday morning against the Osoyoos Rattlers.
“Once again we received a great effort and outplayed Osoyoos but the game ended in disappointment when a Rattlers forward scored a disputed goal, kicking the ball out of goaltender Travis Fox’s hands into the goal,” said Fortune coach Terry Shykora. “Despite a number of excellent scoring chances, the Falcons could not find the back of the net and lost the game 1-0.”
In Game 4, the Falcons faced Southpointe Academy from Tsawwassen and finally converted some scoring chances in a 2-0 win.
Falcons’ leading scorer, Sheldon Croken started it off by going airborne to connect on a corner from Caleb Halvorson. In the second half, Levi Verlaan picked a corner on a feed from Brendan Shykora for the insurance tally.
On Saturday morning, the Falcons faced a hard-working, scrappy crew in Bulkley Valley Christian Royals of Smithers (Most Sportsmanlike Team).
An early goal by Brenden Honeyman gave Fortune the lead, but despite sustained pressure they could not get an insurance marker. With less than a minute left in regulation time, Bulkley Valley evened the score from a scramble.
Fifteen minutes of overtime solved nothing so a penalty shootout was necessary to decide the match. Four of the first five shooters scored for both teams with Sten Korver, Jax Puchinger, Shykora and Halvorson scoring for the Falcons. The game was finally decided when Matthew Bennett scored on a perfect strike and Travis Fox stopped Bulkley Valley’s sixth shooter.
The Falcons finished an excellent season winning the North Okanagan Zone A Boys Soccer league and the prestigious Township Cup versus PVSS.
