Members of the Silver Star Freestyle Ski Club and the B.C. freestyle team spent plenty of time on the podium last weekend at the opening B.C. freestyle series at Apex.

Elena Gaskell led the charge in the Super Youth (8-9 years) category, bringing home gold in both the mogul and slopestyle events, and adding silver in big air.

Samuel Rampado, also in the 8-9 class, medalled in all three of his events with two silver and a bronze.

In the 10-11 division, Declan Stevenson and Stirling Peters put on a spin clinic in the slopestyle, with both athletes pulling 720s on box and air features to collect silver and bronze respectively.

Hayden Person laid down a scorching run in the mogul course to bring home bronze.

Jamie Rykuiter (10-11 girls) completed a fully stretched spread eagle to earn bronze in big air, and had clean jumps and turns to get the same result in moguls.

In the 12-13 youth category, competition team rookie Patrick (Mountain) Dew fought through a stacked field to take bronze.

Coach Connor Reeves came out of retirement to compete in moguls, and was rewarded with gold in the men’s 16-18 category.

Former Silver Star athlete Thomas Rutkowski, now with the Team B.C., struck gold in big air in the M2 category with a rodeo 1080, and followed that with silver in slopestyle and bronze in moguls.

Teammate and fellow SSFC grad Tyson Oland claimed gold in slopestyle.

The second B.C. freestyle series event goes Feb. 3-5 at Silver Star.
