The 16th annual Vernon Senior Oldtimers’ Harvest Hockey Jamboree takes place at the Wesbild Centre during the day from Tuesday, Oct. 2 through Thursday.
Longtime chairman Mike Todd said players will be coming from as far east as New Jersey and Wisconsin; as far south as Arizona and Colorado; north from Alaska; and from the four Western Canadian provinces and Washington and Oregon.
Players enter as individuals, and teams are put together based on age, position and playing experience.
“The games are very competitive and players over the years have remarked on the evenness of the matches,” said Todd.
“I make sure the ringers are spread throughout the three divisions so there are no stacked teams.”
The fun kicks off with the opening dinner at the Schubert Centre on Monday night when the players find out who their teammates are and game times. Wives attend the dinner as well and they are also included in the Tuesday social event.
Entrants are still needed in the Rookies (55-64 or so) and Classics (65-72 or so) divisions and the Legends division has some openings, but is most popular and rapidly filling up.
Entry forms can be downloaded and printed from the website: www.senioroldtimershockey.com or call Mike at 250-549-2311.
As one of the players from last year said: “The teams couldn’t have been more balanced…and that’s part of what makes (the) event so much fun. I also like the fact that there are no trophies or medals…just a big group of senior guys getting together and acting like kids again. What can be more fun?”
