The UBC Okanagan Heat advanced to the PacWest men’s soccer championships with a dramatic shootout win over the Kwantlen Polytechnic Eagles Friday afternoon.

The hero of the game was Heat goalkeeper Spencer Brown, a West Kelowna native, who helped preserve a scoreless draw after regulation and 30 minutes of extra time.

UBCO won 3-1 on penalty kicks, with Brown making two saves. He also stopped a penalty in the 68th minute.

“It’s great for the university, considering where we were last year at the beginning of the season, and coming this far,” said Heat head coach Dante Zanatta.  “For the players, it’s great.”

UBC Okanagan faced the top-seeded Vancouver Island University Mariners of Nanaimo in Saturday’s semifinals.
