Vernon’s Kevin Hill finished 21st overall in FIS World Cup snowboard cross season opener Friday in Montafon, Austria.

Hill, winner of the 2011 Winter X Games snowboard cross, finished behind Canadian teammates Jake Holden of Caledon, Ont. (12th), Chris Robanske of Calgary (14th) and Robert Fagan of Cranbrook (33rd).

The 26-year-old was leading in his opening heat, but went down in turn No. 2, settling for third place. Hill also fell in his first time trial, but recovered in the second run to make the finals.

Omar Visintin of Italy finished first for his first-ever World Cup victory. A former junior world champion, Visintin, 23, outlasted Markus Schainer of Austria, Nick Baumgartner of the U.S. and Alex Pullin of Australia in the final.
