A powerplay goal from Riley Peterson at 6:44 of the third period held on as the game-winner for the Kamloops Rattlers, who edged the hometown Vernon Tigers 11-10 in Thompson Okanagan Senior Lacrosse League play Friday, May 27, at Kal Tire Place in Vernon.
The goal – Peterson’s third of the game – gave Kamloops an 11-9 lead which lasted for 33 seconds before Stephane Richard (Skwrxan) popped home his fourth goal of the night for the Tigers to cut the lead to one.
Neither team could beat goalies Josh Point of Vernon and Kevin Bankier of Kamloops the rest of the way.
Vernon forward Gord Walls-Good did have one good look at goal to try and tie the game for the Tigers in the dying seconds, but his shot was stopped by Bankier.
The Tigers jumped out to a 4-0 lead 10 minutes and 12 seconds into the contest, but Kamloops took advantage of some Vernon penalty woes in the opening 20 minutes to cut the lead to 4-3 after one period.
The Rattlers tied the game 7-7 then took their first lead with goals 16 seconds apart midway through the second period. The teams were tied 9-9 heading into the final 20 minutes.
Point finished with 55 saves on the night while Bankier made 27 stops for Kamloops.
Richard led all scorers with eight points, 4+4, for the Tigers. Craig Bigsby added 3+1, Walls-Good had a goal and four helpers, and single markers went to Reece Betts and Brennan Plante.
Jeremy Bosher had 4+3 to lead the Rattlers, Peterson finished with 3+3, and Morgan Bloom and Colton Boomer added two goals each. Blaine Boomer chipped in five assists. Kamloops scored four times with the man advantage, Vernon only once.
The Tigers will wrap up the home portion of its regular-season schedule Thursday, June 2, when they entertain the Armstrong Shamrocks at Kal Tire Place. Game time will be 7:30 p.m.
The Shamrocks were to host the Princeton Rangers Saturday, May 28, at the Nor-Val Sport Centre, but the game has been rescheduled, pending arena availability, to Saturday, June 4, at 6 p.m.
