Kozak banks third

After firing a tournament-low 7-under par 65 Thursday, Vernon’s Conner Kozak followed up with another low round 5-under 67 to finish third at the B.C. Junior Men’s Golf Championships Friday at Rossland-Trail Country Club.

The Spallumcheen Golf & Country Club member finished with 75-75-65-67 for a 6-under 282 total, eight strokes back of defending champion Adam Svensson of Surrey (67-68-71-68).

Kozak, a Seaton grad, was one stroke back of runner-up Kevin Kwon of Pitt Meadows (67-72-74-68). He dropped his third  eagle of the tourney with a 12-foot putt on the final hole, the 514-yrd par 5 on No. 18, securing the last spot on Team B.C. for the Canadian Juniors, Aug. 1-5 at Surrey’s Morgan Creek.

Spall’s Brady Stead finished tied for 58th at 22-over (73-73-80-84).

Both Kozak and Stead will join locals Brad Jones, Justin Wurz and David Szestopalow at the B.C. Amateur Championships, starting Tuesday at The Dunes in Kamloops.

Meanwhile, junior golfers in the Interior have two more Maple Leaf Tour (MJT) events to add to the summer calendar.

The tour hits in Kelowna on Thursday and Friday at the Harvest Golf Club, followed by another two-day tourney, starting Monday, Aug. 8 at Predator Ridge.
