Both Armstrong Shamrock lacrosse teams are ready to fire up their 2014 seasons.
The senior Shamrocks are set to host the Prince George Bandits and Alberta’s Spruce Grove Tomahawks in the 2014 Owen Siddall Memorial Ice Breaker tournament Friday and Saturday at the Nor-Val Sports Centre.
Siddall was an immensely popular goalie with the Shamrocks who died suddenly in October 2012.
“We only have three teams this year, however we still have a lot of exciting lacrosse action. We have changed the format into a series of mini games,” said Chad Pieper, Shamrocks goalie.
Games will now be two 25-minute halves. In the event of a tie they will go to an NHL-style shootout.
The Shamrocks begin Friday night 6:30 p.m. against the Bandits, followed immediately with a tilt against the Tomahawks at 7:40.
Saturday is jam-packed with lacrosse.
The Shamrocks will host Spruce Grove at 11:35 a.m. followed by playing Prince George at 12:55 p.m.
There is a five-hour break until the three teams are back at it. Armstrong takes on Prince George at 6:30 and Spruce Grove at 7:40.
The Thompson Okanagan Junior Lacrosse League also has its icebreaker tournament on Saturday around senior games at the Nor-Val Sports Centre.
The 9th annual Archie Jack Memorial Ice Breaker tournament will feature all the teams in the league.
The Vernon Tigers take on the Armstrong Shamrocks at 8:30 a.m. Saturday.
The Tigers play again at 1:30 p.m. against the South Okanagan Flames.
The Shamrocks finish up their day with a game against the Kelowna Raiders at 3 p.m. The Kamloops Rattlers round out the five-team loop.
