Derek Huisken racked up 15 points as the host Kalamalka Lakers grounded the Vernon Panthers 20-12 in Okanagan Senior AA Boys Rugby League action Monday afternoon.

Huisken scored a try and booted two conversions and two penalty kicks, while Tom Hettrich scored a try on a blocked clearance attempt from deep within the VSS zone.

Thomas Mills, on a great kick and chase, and Keaton Hubner, after some relentless efforts from the Panther forward pack, recorded tries for VSS.

The game was a spirited affair, with lots of emotion and many strong tackles from both sides. It was balanced by a sense of sportsmanship, with players helping one another up when play had moved on.

The Laker forwards absorbed constant Panther forward pressure, and the Laker backs tackled well to stop the hard-running VSS players. Until the blocked kick, the game was up for grabs as the Lakers tenuously held onto a 13-12 lead with nine minutes remaining.

Huisken opened the scoring with a strong run down the right wing to touch down under the posts. After adding the convert, he then supplied a penalty goal to make it 10-0 before the Panthers pounced on a Laker error inside their 22-metre line to make it 10-5 at the break.

In the second half, VSS scored under the posts after relentless forward pressure. They made the convert to make it 12-10.

Huisken replied with a 35-m penalty to restore the Lakers’ lead.

The Kal coaches were very pleased with the entire team effort, and singled out forwards Nathan Meyer, Robby Filice and captain Chace Ldyka, and backs Cam Strike and Hayse Harrison.
