Lillian Marchand of Vernon claimed a gold medal in her division at the International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation Pan Kids event in Carson, Calif.

The seven-year-old trains at North Okanagan-Shuswap Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Mixed Martial Arts and competed in one of the largest and most prestigious kids tournaments in North America. Marchand won the title via arm bar.

Also competing from same club was Winter Breget, who lost a very close match by points to last year’s tournament champion, while his brother, Elan, won his first match via arm bar, but lost a close second match on points as well.

North Okanagan head coach Mario Deveault travelled to California to support his students.

“All the kids proved that they can win and compete at these high-level tournies,” said Deveault, who operates clubs in Vernon and Salmon Arm and has produced numerous tournament champions over the years.

Deveault also gave credit to the parents for the support they offer to their children.

“We have one of the biggest kids programs in B.C., and I enjoy teaching and watching them learn and grow everyday; our coaching staff really care about all the kids.”
