That was the basic strategy used by the Maroons in a 53-28 senior AA varsity football victory over the Westsyde Blue Wave of Kamloops Friday night under the lights at Greater Vernon Athletics Park.

Quarterback Ike Olson rushed for three touchdowns, two 15-yarders and one 18 as the surging Maroons kept running the ball hard. It was 26-6 Fulton at the half. The Maroons are on a three-game winning streak.

Ryan Rumsey added TD runs of 18 and five yards, while Caden Doyle scampered 18 yards for another score and took a punt return 60 yards for paydirt. Koalden Gudeit Oakden punched one run in from 13 yards.

“We are definitely happy to have walked off the field with the victory tonight,” said Fulton head coach Mike Scheller. “Westsyde was pesky. They just kept on clawing all game and we could not deliver a knockout punch. I credit them for that.

“We had a comfortable lead going into the second half, but they matched us score for score. Offensively, we continue to put up big numbers on the ground and that is a credit to our O-line. Coaches Darryl Thomas and Clay Coles have done a good job with those kids.”

Jeff Han, Doyle and Rumsey each had interceptions, while JJ Heaton posted eight tackles, Gudeit earned five and Ethan Schiman produced four.

“Defensively, JJ Óeaton was a beast for us in the middle,” added Scheller. “He made a lot of stops in the run game and was tough. We play great in spurts defenively, but we give up too many big plays. The big play kills us. However, we are happy to have won three in a row.”

Fulton faces VSS in a Friday showdown (7:30) at the college.
