Maroons smother Saints

Amanda Sakamoto turned in a solid two-way performance to pocket 16 points and game MVP as the Fulton Maroons grounded the Pleasant Valley Saints 76-27 in North Zone senior AA girls basketball play Friday night at Fulton Gym.

The Maroons, who led 37-10 at the break, got a game-high 21 points from Kelsey Thompson, and 10 points from Melissa Silva.

The Saints were led by Andreanne Nelson and Taryn Frederick, who supplied six points apiece.

“Amanda was outstanding in the first half on both sides of the ball,” said Fulton head coach Jim Inglis.

“We got the performances I expect from Kelsey and Tavia Lochhead, but the three I thought really stepped up their games tonight were Melissa Silva, Karlee Webb and Danika Serafin.

“They were creative on offence and tenacious on the boards, creating new possession and second opportunities. Their aggressive play had the Armstrong girls on their heels and it set the tone.”

The Maroons lead the North Zone standings at 3-0.

On Wednesday night, the Saints, now 2-1, thumped the Vernon secondary Panthers 81-41.
