Ron Nolan stored his golf clubs and hopped on a mountain bike for 15 years.

The longtime Vernon Square Safeway employee parked his bike and started hitting the links again three years ago.

The lengthy layoff didn’t hamper his game much. The 3-handicap carded rounds of 73-74 last weekend to claim his first Spallumcheen Golf &Country Club men’s title by one stroke over JP Duranaleau.

“I was hitting my irons really well which made up for my below-average short game,” laughed Nolan, a 45-year-old who regularly played Spall and Vernon courses as a teen. “My putting wasn’t that great either and I only had two blow-up holes on Sunday.”

Nolan triple-bogyed the fourth hole along Highway 97 by knocking his drive left and doubled No. 16 by smacking a ball into the pond. He received a Cobra bag and a dozen balls. There was a field of 65.

Meanwhile, Katrina Lenoury shot 78-80-158 for her third ladies title in the last five years. There were 30 entries.

Lenoury pocketed a Greg Norman outfit and a dozen balls.

Gord Rowland was the overall low net champion at 148. He took home a Sun Ice jacket and some balls. Colleen Schier claimed the ladies low net at 131, earning the same prizes as Lenoury.

Lenoury and Daisy Baker garnered KP prizes.

Scott Pisiak, a longtime member, carded an ace on the par-3 third hole using a 5-wood Sunday. He previously produced hole-in-ones on the 15th and 12th holes at Spall.

“It looked good in the air,” said Pisiak. “I heard it slam the pin, but couldn’t tell if the ball had ricocheted off the pin from the tee. We didn’t know it had gone in until we got to the hole. My eyes are bad; I’m getting them checked today.”

Pisiak was playing with Wayne Brown and John Lysholm.

“It’s the second best hole-in-one I’ve been a part of on that hole. Dave Haverty’s is still the best (we split a car four ways).”
