The Vernon Female Pee Wee Rep Lakers stopped Kamloops 5-3 in exhibition hockey action Sunday at Civic Arena.

Samantha Head opened the Laker scoring on a feed from Cassidy Marshall followed by a goal from Mairyn Tucker, assisted by Jordan Butler and Emily Clarke.

Kamloops answered back with a late first-period goal and then connected again midway through the second period to equalize.

After the break, Vernon scored on a great solo effort from Marshall. Kamloops answered back quickly to tie it 3-3.

Vernon then carried much of the play and relied on goaltender Selena Collee to make keys saves when required. At 3:22 of the third period, Andie Kaneda battled coast to coast to score what turned out to be the winner.

Things got a little crazy late when Kamloops called a time out to put together one final attack. They gained control in the Vernon end and with their goalie off for a sixth player, they had a scoring chance denied by Collee with 17 seconds left.

Head took a roughing penalty and with the face off in Vernon’s end, Tucker won the draw to Makenna Southam who cleared the zone. Tucker picked the puck up and broke free to score an empty-netter with two seconds remaining.

Vernon, coached by Arne Flaten, also got some great defensive work from Amy-Rae, Courtney Graves, Ailish Curran and Tiera Joseph, and great forechecking from Carly Southam, Julia McCaig and Chelsea Marshall.

The Lakers visit Kamloops on Saturday and entertain them Sunday (12:30 p.m.) at Civic.
