Vernon’s Vasek Pospisil will return to national tennis duty as Canada battles South Africa in a Davis Cup by BNP Paribas World Group playoff tie.
Pospisil, along with Frank Dancevic (Niagara Falls, Ont.), Daniel Nestor (Toronto) and Milos Raonic (Thornhill, Ont.) were named to the squad by captain Martin Laurendeau. They will compete on outdoor hard court at Uniprix Stadium in Montreal from Sept. 14-16.
The 6-foot-4 Pospisil was the only member of Canada’s Davis Cup team to compete at all three ties in 2011. He turned pro in 2007.
Pospisil, 22, now based in Vancouver, was stellar in Canada’s World Group playoff versus Israel last September, capturing both of his singles matches and the doubles match with Nestor to advance Canada back to the World Group. He has won two National Bank Challenger titles in Rimouski and Granby this season in addition to reaching a career-high ranking of No. 85 (he is currently 103rd).
The South African Tennis Federation selected Izak Van Der Merwe (No. 190), Rik De Voest (No. 170), Raven Klaasen (No. 544) and Nikala Scholtz for its lineup in Montreal.
