Royals secure track medals

The Vernon Christian Royals excelled at the Battle of the Border Track and Field meet in Kamloops

The Vernon Christian Royals excelled at the Battle of the Border Track and Field meet in Kamloops last Saturday.

Alexandra Michalewicz and Lindsay Petruk led the Royals. Michalewicz propelled the team with first in the junior girls shot put (7.70 metres) and first in hammer throw (18.45m) and third in discus.

Petruk finished second in the 100m (13.90) and second in the long jump (4.14m) and third (1.39m) in high jump.

Solomon Bortucene and Lucas Pool led the junior boys team both on the track and in the throwing competitions. Bortucene was third in the 1,500m in 5:22.67 and fourth in shot put. Pool was sixth in the 1,500m and second in shot put. He also placed fourth in javelin with a throw of 23.15m.

The Grade 8 athletes also placed well.  Kailyn Halvorson led the pack with a first in long jump at 4.06m, fourth in the 100m and third in shot put, while Niki Michalewicz placed first in the triple jump (7.15m) and second in the 80m hurdles.

Sarah Mitchell ranked second in the 1,500m and eighth in the 100m. Chase Petruk tossed the shot put to a second-place result, and took silver in the  100m.

“All of them should be proud of their results,” said coaches Kate Stei and Chris Bannick. “Their commitment to practice and compete has brought them success. Results for the school athletes continue to progress as the program continues to excel with perseverance and dedication.”

The Royals will compete at the Valley championships for Grades 8-12 next Wednesday in Kamloops.
