Scheller revives Fulton rugby

Junior and senior rugby programs return to Fulton secondary.

Mike Scheller is back after coaching high school football in Las Vegas for one semester.

With Scheller returning to Fulton, the rugby program has been jumpstarted with Scheller running both the senior and junior Maroons programs.

Fulton played their first senior rugby game in two years last Thursday and brushed back the host Okanagan Mission Huskies 10-0 in Kelowna.

The Maroons entertain the VSS Panthers in North Zone play today (4 p.m., Grahame Park).

Clark Richardson recorded a try, conversion and penalty kick for all 10 points.

“Clark obviously had a great game,” said Scheller. “He has that extra gear and knack for running the ball that few players have. His kicking was also excellent. Layne Greene and Lucas Hofer were all over the field and were tackling machines.

“Lock Jordan Cabrejos, hooker Adam Woods and 8-man Kacey Smart were all solid in our forward pack, and we spent a lot of time tackling in the game. When we got possession of the ball, we attacked quite well.”

Scheller said several Maroons got in their first-ever rugby game and showed fine hustle and aggression.

The junior Maroons face the Shuswap Rams Thursday at Grahame Park.
