It’s been a long time since Westside tasted defeat in the Capri Okanagan Oldtimers 55+ Soccer League.
That changed Thursday at Marshall Field when Vernon Silver Stars scored a 2-1 win over previously unbeaten Westside, who entered the game atop the table at 15-0-1, and who hadn’t lost in 37 games.
Two goals from Mark Wasylyk in the first half countered the opening Westside goal for the Stars, who received a sparking performance in net from Yogi Kongsdorf.
In other league play at Marshall Field, Kelowna’s North Country Appraisal Kickers kicked Vernon Kal Tire 7-0.
Steve Frost had two goals for the Kickers.
KELOWNA TREE BREWING MEN'S 35+ LEAGUE
Vernon Kal Tire FC solidified its hold on third place in the Kelowna Tree Brewing Men’s 35+ Soccer League Thursday, downing Company FC 5-2 in Kelowna.
Kevin Lynes opened the scoring for Kal Tire (11-6-0) with a hard shot to the corner.
Lynes was then fouled inside the penalty box where Rodney Goodchild showed his Okanagan Spirits by stepping up to the spot and burying the kick.
Company FC pulled to within one, punishing the tiremen for unsuccessfully pulling off an offside trap.
Michael Arding took a cross from Glenn Allan, who received a through ball from Jason Beck, and scored to restore Kal’s two-goal lead before the intermission.
Kal Tire made it 4-1 on a penalty shot from Jesse Knight, whose effort was stopped by the Company keeper but Lynes was in position to pocket the rebound.
Company FC (1-16-1) got one back on a breakaway beforer Arding fed Bryan Schenker, who one-timed a volley to round out the scoring.
NORTH OKANAGAN WOMEN'S SOCCER DIVISION 2
The Rock Stars maintained first place in North Okanagan Women’s Soccer Division 2 action Thursday at Marshall Field, blanking Collaborate Wellness 3-0.
Goals for the league-leading Rock Stars (7-2-2) came from Leah Willinger, Brooke Hackle and Sherah Grant.
“This year, we got a new coach, Mark Patenaude, and we’ve never played better as a team,” said Dana Loukota of the Rock Stars. “Our stamina, passing and overall skills have improved. We are so happy Marc has joined our team.”
Sylvie Richard recorded the shutout.
Player of the game for Collaborate was Tierney Barker. The team’s defence played great, led by the play of midfielders Amanda Penner, Hollie Olinski and Kirsten Mihalcheon, and keepers Alana McColm and Waverly Vanderveen.
