Vernon Ski Club athletes dominated the recent Okanagan Zone Alpine Ski Zone Race at Revelstoke Mountain Resort.

In the giant slalom event, weather played havoc and the race was called after one run.

Vernon athletes earned five of the six gold medals awarded.  In U16 ladies, Katrina van Soest won gold and shared the podium with Ravi Vliet, who received a bronze; Holly Clancy finished 7th.

In U16 men, Gavin Donald shared his podium gold with Christopher Richardson, who raced to a bronze medal finish; Langdon Kersey finished fifth, Antony de Wet was seventh and Taylor Clark finished top-10.

Sara MacGillivray’s U14 ladies gold gave her top spot on the podium. She was joined by teammate Makena Kersey who earned bronze; Robyn de Wet was awarded fifth place.

In the U14 men, Anton Youngberg captured gold while Caele Kassa narrowly missed the podium with a fourth place finish, and Ethan Clancy finished top-10.

Rane Smith finished with a gold in U12 girls while Emma Lockwood earned fourth, Katrina Fink was 10th, Nadia Jones 15th, Natasha Jones 19th and Morgan Clark was 21st.

Christopher Kersey was top-10 in the U12 boys while Cole Ogasawara was top-20.

On Sunday the athletes raced a two-run slalom through moving fog, snow, and wind.

Anton Youngberg repeated his gold medal performance while Braden Kersey finished sixth. Christopher Richardson and Antony de Wet were awarded first and third respectively in their age group, while in U12 boys Austin Armanini was top-10, Christopher Kersey 12th, and Cole Ogasawara 14th.

Katrina Fink was the top Vernon U12 girl slalom skier finishing fifth while Rane Smith was sixth, Nadia Jones seventh, with Emma Lockwood 16th, Natasha Jones 18th and Morgan Clark 22nd.

Consistency paid off for Gavin Donald, Antony de Wet and Langdon Kersey throughout the season as they were awarded first, second, and third respectively as U16 Boys Overall Okanagan Zone Champions.

Said U16 head coach Andrew Lambert: “It was really worth the wait in the rain at the awards ceremony to see our U16 boys sweep the Overall Champion podium, as well as seeing the Vernon Ski Club Team taking a total of seven gold medals over the weekend.”
