Vernon’s U14 Sky Black Boys captured gold in the Volleyball B.C. Okanagan Super Spike at UBCO last weekend. It was a 15-team tournament.
On the first day, they placed second in their pool by defeating the Focus Impact U13 of Surrey 25-23, 25-14, and lost a close set to Apex Acers of Penticton 25-21, 8-25, 13-15. This set them up in the first playoff match which they won two straight 25-21, 25-21 against Air Attack Black of Richmond.
The second day was playoffs among the top-eight teams. Vernon defeated Focus Crush of Surrey 12-25, 25-19, 16-14 to reach the semifinals. They then gelled and played the best match of the tournament by defeating Prince George Kodiaks 25-18, 25-14.
In the gold match, they bounced the Barn Owls of Kelowna 25-23, 15-25, 15-13.
“We went in there hoping to finish in the top half, and they really outdid themselves. When one line struggled, the other line stepped up for their team. It truly was a team effort,” said Vernon head coach Richard Bedard.
