Peter Smith owned a $10 junior membership at the nine-hole Vernon Golf & Country Club back in the day.
So, one could claim that home-course knowledge helps him maintain a six handicap at a young 68.
Smith also held a steady putter Sunday as he carded a 4-over 76 to win the senior men’s club championship by three strokes over neighbour and car-pool buddy Dale Ortman.
“The biggest thing was no three putts,” laughed Smith, a retired Air Force man who pocketed $100 from the pro shop. “That being said, I didn’t make any 10- or 12-footers. I just grinded it out, Par-par, boring golf.”
Smith, who also took the seniors glory three years ago, shot 75 Saturday in a field of 70. There were 10 players in the junior tournament, won by Ryley Johnson, at 75-78-153.
Ortman finished at 77-77-154 and took home $75 in pro shop dollars.
Blaine MacPherson garnered the overall seniors low net title at 133, also earning $100.
Henry Huizinga was low net runner-up with a 139 total.
David Murison won the super seniors low gross title, while Joe O’Hearn took the low net crown, both good for $50.
