The Steve Nash Youth Basketball program has just completed its fourth season with great strides.
There were 240 hoopsters this year compared to just 80 in the original season.
“Friday night basketball started out in three gyms and has expanded to all 11 elementary school gyms in Vernon and Coldstream,” said director Johnal Lee. “We have had a lot of support from the school district, teachers, parents and businesses.”
Lee found it rewarding to see kids who couldn’t dribble four years ago competing in inter-city tournaments and dominating with their skills.
“Kindergarten and Grade 1 kids were invited to join for the first time this year and it was overwhelmingly successful. It’s a very satisfying feeling to be part of spreading the love of the game to this community. Coaches from almost every school have donated time to this endeavour and I’m sure that these kids will never forget this experience.”
All the 30-plus coaches and administration are volunteers and 100 per cent of the registration fees go towards gym time, jerseys, basketballs, water bottles, medals, prizes and advertising.
The registration fee is just $100 and includes a Steve Nash Youth Basketball jersey, basketball, water bottle and much more over 10 weeks.
The program can still go bigger. To volunteer for the 2013 fall program, contact Lee at email@example.com.
