Thunder roll in Game 1

Vernon’s Brodie MacDonald recorded 38 saves as the Langley Thunder iced the host Peterborough Lakers 13-12 in Game 1 of the Mann Cup national Senior A lacrosse championships Friday night at Memorial Centre.

Trailing 5-2 after one period, the underdog Thunder stormed back with five unanswered goals in the second period, taking an 8-6 lead into the break.

Peterborough equalized on back-to-back goals before the midway mark of the third period, but Langley came right back with two in a row to restore the lead for good.

Joel McCready led the Thunder with three goals, while Athan Iannucci had two goals and four assists and Alex Turner had a pair.

Matt Leveque, Garrett Billings, Shayne Jackson, Lewis Ratcliff, Kerry Susheskie and Rob Van Beek rounded out the scoring for the WLA champions.

John Grant Jr., the third highest scorer in Mann Cup history, collected three of his five goals in the first frame, and ended with 5+2.

Game 2 goes today at Memorial Centre. Games 3 and 4 of the best-of-seven series are slated for Monday and Wednesday. If necessary, the remaining games would run Friday, Saturday and next Sunday.
