Vernon's Brodie MacDonald records 39 saves as Langley Thunder bounce Burnaby Lakers in WLA playoff opener.

A powerplay goal with 35 seconds remaining helped Brodie MacDonald’s Langley Thunder take Game 1 in the best-of-seven Western Lacrosse Association playoff series with the Burnaby Lakers.

Lewis Ratcliff’s third goal of the game snapped the tie, sending the Thunder to a 9-8 victory over Burnaby Wednesday night at the Langley Events Centre.

MacDonald backstopped his team with a 39-save showing.

Game 2 goes tonight at Burnaby’s Bill Copeland Arena, with Game 3 set for Tuesday at the LEC.

The Lakers scored twice late in the game to equalize, and added three goals with the man advantage against the top-seeded and defending champion Thunder.

Burnaby led 3-2 after 20 minutes and pulled ahead by a pair of goals early in the second, but Langley countered with six of the next seven goals and led 8-6 after two periods.

Ratcliff finished with three goals and three assists while Garrett Billings also had a six-point performance with a goal and five helpers.
