Track club registers 57 medals

The Vernon AAA Track and Field Club’s efforts paid off at the 34th annual Jack Brow Track Meet in Kelowna.

Many personal bests were attained by the Junior Development athletes and by the 14-19 year olds that competed from July 1-3.

Overall, 57 medals were won by the 31 Vernon athletes against kids from clubs in Alberta, Yukon, B.C. and Australia.

Newcomers Daniel Hall, Owen Challen, Declan Fitzpatrick, Ty Bartel, Jordan Andrews and Kate Gareau put in strong performances in their first sanctioned meet.

The mixed-aged boys 100 metre relay team consisting of Matthew Acob, Ty Bartel, Zach Loland, and Carter Leahy won the 13-year-old  category. They also won an additional costume relay running in hula skirts and passing a banana.

Acob placed first in the 600 and 1,000m in the 11-year-old male category and Leahy won first in the 800m, 1,200m and 200m hurdles for the 12-year-old male.

Jared Sexsmith struck gold in high jump for 18-19 junior male tying with Chris Loland who also got first javelin.

Coach Hedley Larsen got gold in discus for the 50-54 male category.

Paige Leahy won the high jump in the nine-year-old female category. Brooke Lawlor claimed gold for 13-year-old female in the 1,200m.

Annika Ariano pocketed gold in 2,000m 14-15-year-old (Midget) female.

Assistant coach Delilah Topic placed first in the 1,500m and 5,000m in the 35-39-year-old-female category.
