The Endurance Health and Fitness Tri Monsters, representing the North Okanagan, had a fantastic day at the recent Summerland Kids of Steel Triathlon and Sprint Triathlon.

The event, sponsored by Dirty Laundry and BCMI and organized by the Summerland Orcas Swim Club was the final competition of the year for the Tri Monsters’ inaugural season.

A total of 16 Tri Monsters, along with six other Vernon youth, participated in the kids races, while numerous Vernon and Coldstream adults took part in the sprint event, including four parents and coaches.

“It was fantastic to be able to show team colours and have a great group of parents and kids represent the North Okanagan at this event,” said Tri Monsters co-founder and head coach Laura Medcalf.

“There were a lot of smiles out on the course, and that is really what this is all about, providing the kids with the skills and confidence to go out there and have fun while being active and fit.”

Tri Monster assistant coach Alesha Miller won the overall women’s race in one hour, nine minutes and 41 seconds. Coach Medcalf placed ninth with 1:14.14 and coach Spooner placed 10th in 1:14.51.

Tri Monster assistant coach Christa Miller placed second in women’s 20-29 division in 1:19.03. Russ Miller won the men’s 60-69 division in 1:25,57, Cath Morris’ 1:30.16 was good enough to win the women’s 60-69 division and Sue Abbott captured the women’s 70-79 age group with 1:37.33. All are members of Endurance Health and Fitness and train under the guidance of coach Melissa Spooner.

On the kids side, Paige Leahy won silver in the F6-7 and Mitchell Bond captured second in the M8-9 for the Tri Monsters.

The Adult Sprint and Kids of Steel Triathlon were held at Peach Orchard Beach. The event has been a success for more than two decades.
