Vernon club members sparkle at track meet

The Vernon AAA track and field club recorded several outstanding finishes at the Jack Brow Memorial Meet and B.C. Masters Championships

The Vernon AAA track and field club recorded several outstanding finishes at the Jack Brow Memorial Track and Field Meet and B.C. Masters Championships in Kelowna.

Carter Leahy, 10, won the 60-metre hurdles, 1,000m and 600m. He placed second in discus, third in high jump and long jump and fourth in the 60m and 100m.

Fellow 10-year-old Zach Loland won javelin, finished second in high jump, third in the 60m hurdles and fourth in shot put and 600m.

Mitchell Bond, nine, won the 600m and 1,000m, finished second in high jump, fourth in the 60m, fifth in the 60m hurdles and 100m.

Jared Sexsmith grabbed the gold in high jump, while Chris Loland finished second and third in javelin in the 16/17 year old division.

Tyson Holgate brought home the bronze in the 300m in the 14/15 division and Connor Hamilton, 11, won bronze in high jump.

Liam VanWyk, 12, won bronze in high jump.

Jerry Reitman finished second in the 1,500 and 3,000m race walk for the 65-69 years-old division. He finished fifth in discus.

On the girls side, Hannah Bennison won the 2,000m in a personal best time of six minutes, 24.42 seconds, the fastest time in Canada this year for the 14/15 age group.

Bennison finished second in the 1,200m by 1.6 seconds to a runner from Nanaimo in the same age category.

Tyra Gilbert won the 100m in the 18/19 year old division and took the silver in long jump and 100m hurdles.

Sarah Holman, 13, finished second in high jump and Josie Sexsmith, also 13, placed third in javelin and fifth in shot put.

Kaetlyn Barry, 10, won silver in the 600m, while placing fifth in the 60m and long jump.

Victoria Barry, 10, took third in the 600m and fourth in the high jump.

Thirteen-year-old Jaeda Ostoforoff won bronze in the 100m, fifth in the 80m hurdles and seventh in long jump.

Brooke Lawlor, 11, finished third in 1,000m and fourth in the 600m.

Other finishes for the boys: Carsun Minshull, 10, placed eighth in the 60m, Tyler Hamilton, 11, finished eighth in the 600m and 1,000m, Eric Urquhart, 13, finished sixth in the 200m and long jump and Gage Stoll, 11, finished fourth in the 600m and sixth in the 1,000m.

Honourable mention in the girls division: Haven Mills, 11, who placed 10th in the 200m, Morgan Mills, 12, finished fifth in high jump, Megan Loland placed sixth in the 200m hurdles for the 14/15 division, Julianna Spitzer, 10, placed fourth in the 600m, sixth in discus, Abby Lawlor, nine, took seventh in the 600m, eighth in the long jump, Hillary Quiring, nine, placed fourth in the 60m, fifth in the long jump and Hailey Quiring, 13, was sixth in javelin.
