Vernon girls add firepower

Vernon girls help Kamloops Ice Pirates win Stampede Challenge AAA Hockey Tournament in Calgary.

Four Vernon girls were impact players as the  Kamloops Ice Pirates won the 18th annual Stampede Challenge AAA Hockey Tournament last weekend in Calgary.

The Ice Pirates brushed back the Red Deer Rustlers 3-0 in the Pee Wee Female championship final at the Trico Family Leisure Centre.

Makenna Hoffman, Jenna Fletcher, Samantha Head and Juli Gilowski all played big roles as the Ice Pirates went undefeated in round-robin action.

Players from Kitimat, Nakusp, Nelson, Kelowna, Fruitvale and Cranbrook also represented the Ice Pirates.

The Ice Pirates stopped Sask Xcel 6-1, crushed Foothills Elite of Calgary 7-1, tied the NAA Crunch of Edmonton 4-4 in a penalty-filled affair and defeated Can-West Rush of  Edmonton 3-1.

They clipped the Crunch 3-2 in an overtime semifinal.

The feisty Head was tied for second in tournament points with 3-5-8 while adding 14 penalty minutes. Fletcher scored four times, while Hoffman earned 3-1-4.

Fletcher bagged two goals, including the winner, in the final. Hoffman supplied 1+1.

Fletcher netted the overtime winner, at 1:21, in the semifinal.
