It’s been quite the past three months for the W.L Seaton Secondary Sonics girls rugby sevens team.
After forming a team for the first time back in early March, the Sonics have wrapped up their season with an impressive sixth place performance at the B.C. provincial championship.
The tournament took place from May 31 to June 2 in Abbotsford.

Day 1 of the competition saw the Sonics go undefeated, winning 22-17 over Victoria’s Oak Bay Barbarians; 39-0 against the Mt. Baker Wild of Cranbrook; and a 29-10 victory over Aldergrove Community Totems.
“The girls did a great job staying levelheaded and not getting rattled by a dirtier style of rugby,” said head coach Alyson Lypchuk after their victory over Aldergrove.
On Day 2, the team lost a tight contest against their Okanagan Valley rivals, the NorKam Saints from Kamloops. It was a rematch of the valley championship, in which NorKam won 27-0. At provincials, the Sonics showed fight, in a tight 12-10 loss.
“Defensively our girls played such a strong game,” said Lypchuk. “I think they surprised NorKam with how much they improved in a week’s time, but it was tough to lose by just one conversion.”
The loss dropped Seaton to the consolation side of the top-eight, where they then beat Heritage Woods Kodiaks of Port Moody 24-16, before losing another hard fought rematch against Oak Bay by a score of 15-7.
Grade 12 Sonic Abby Lawlor was named tournament all-star.
