One of Vernon’s most decorated skiers will be making an appearance at an annual fundraising gala in Vancouver.
Elena Gaskell, the 22-year-old freestyle skiing dynamo, will be attending the RBC JCC Sports Dinner, which is an event that provides scholarships and programs for members of the greater Vancouver community. She also attended the dinner in 2023.
“It was a great experience, meeting so many sports fans who are also really passionate about supporting community-level recreation in B.C.,” said Gaskell. “During the reception there was also a very competitive game of giant Jenga, with hundreds watching – which I won of course!”
Seven-time Grand Slam singles tennis champion John McEnroe will be headlining the event.
“Last year I shared a stage with Rob Gronkowski, so I think I’ll be ready for John McEnroe,” said Gaskell. “They’re both big personalities so it will be a lot of fun.”
Gaskell is a double gold medallist in slopestyle and big air freestyle for Team B.C. at the 2015 Canada Winter Games. She won bronze at the 2020 World Cup slopestyle event and was poised to attend her first Olympic Games in 2022, but suffered a torn ACL on the last day of training in Beijing, China.
The RBC JCC Sports Dinner will be held Wednesday, Feb. 28 at the Hyatt Regency in downtown Vancouver.
