Vernon rallies at Junior Ryder Cup

Vernon golfers defeat Kelowna counterparts 10-8 in two-day junior golf event in Spallumcheen and West Kelowna

Four wins from Dexter Wieten, Taylor Scott, Ryan Vest and Matt Kreutz on the second day gave Vernon a 10-8 win over Kelowna in the annual Junior Ryder Cup golf event.

The event was held at the Spallumcheen Golf and Country Club (first day) and West Kelowna’s Two Eagles Golf Course on day two.

Participants played regular golf the first day with the lowest net scores getting points for their team. Wieten, Michael Lenoury, Ryan Vest and Anthony Prince led the way with net scores the first day for Vernon with 70, 71, 71 and 72.

Team Kelowna got points from Tanner Marshal (net 64) and Jessica Claggett (net 70). Vernon led 6-2 after the first day.

The second day was straight match play. Nik Federko beat Lenoury and Parker Wadsworth in the first two matches, Kristian Oppenheim beat Seth Blundell and Brandon Jewsbury knocked off Brandon Magnus to square the matches 6-6.

After that Vernon came back with the victories from Wieten, Scott, Vest and Kreutz to post a 10-8 overall win.

  • Lenoury, Kreutz, Matt McEachran-Law and Russell Day are Vernon golfers scheduled to compete at the B.C. Junior Boys golf championships in Pitt Meadows. Play began Tuesday.
