A Vernon trio boosted the Northern 2000 Selects out of Williams Lake to a gold medal in the Mainland AA Challenge Cup last weekend in Vancouver.

Defencemen Powell Connor and Dylan Sedlacek, and power forward Levi (The Big Easy) Danbrook helped the Selects smother the previously undefeated Prince George Icehawks 9-2 in Monday’s final.

Connor and Sedlacek played as a defensive tandem and logged huge minutes as the team went with four d-men. Connor finished the tourney with 3+2, while Sedlacek had four assists. Danbrook played on the top scoring line and created time and space for two of the tournament’s top scorers, and chipped in with 3+1.

The Selects stuffed the North Shore Vipers 5-0 in the semifinals after grounding the unbeaten Seattle Thunderbirds 7-2.

In round-robin play, the Selects upended the Vancouver Icemen 7-2, rolled over the Island Stars 8-1 and beat the North Shore Vipers 3-0 while outshooting them 35-5. Head coach of the Selects was Brad Wilde of Lake Country.

Connor and Vernon’s Coleton Bilodeau are off to Winnipeg and Calgary next month with the Pacific Alliance. They are in a pool with the Vancouver Selects, Mountain Selects, and Minnesota Blades, in the Winnipeg tournament.

Meanwhile, the Okanagan 2002 All-Stars, led by Vernon products Cameron Moger, Caden Danbrook, Ben King, Anne Cherkowski and Tanner Brown, bagged a bronze medal with a 11-2 win over the Vancouver Selects Black.

In Mainland Cup preliminary play, the All-Stars went 2-1 by beating the B.C. Blackhawks 2-1, icing the Vancouver Vipers 5-2 and falling 4-2 to the Island Stars.

In the quarterfinals, the All-Stars ambushed the Kamloops Pirates 7-1 and then took a 3-0 lead before losing 6-3 to the No. 1 seeded B.C. Bears.

“The kids played great and proved to themselves they can play against the top Vancouver teams,” said head coach Sandy Moger, of Vernon.
