Kal Tire and Silver Stars battled to a good, clean 1-1 draw in Okanagan Men’s 50+ Soccer League action Thursday night at Marshall Field #5.
Striker Rob Ross took a long feed from central midfielder Steve Coombs, stretched out and brilliantly flicked the ball top shelf past keeper Geoff Bradbury, for the Stars’ late equalizer.
The 13-7-2 Tiremen, who had ambushed the shortstaffed Stars 7-1 two months ago, took the early lead in the first half when Mark Devolder bounced a shot off keeper Yogi Kongsdorf and walked the rebound into the empty net. Jim Sparrow and Kevin Mitchell had worked the ball up to Devolder.
Bradbury made an awesome diving save off Ross in the first half, while Kongsdorf came out to challenge and outguess Jenne Huberts on a lengthy first-half breakaway after a nifty feed by Mitchell. Kongsdorf also stripped Mitchell of the ball on a weak header attempt into the sun.
Sparrow, who ran miles despite just returning from a 99-hole golf tour in Arizona, earned the Darin’s Plumbing Man of the Match for Kal Tire.
Defender Bob Oldfield, who was humming Beatles tunes in between dishing off countless fabulous passes, earned the Liverpool Grocery Man of the Match for the Stars (9-8-5).
Central defender Gary Dill for the Tiremen and defender Al Bensmiller for the Stars, also enjoyed strong showings.
