Vernon track stars pocket provincial medals

Vernon Triple A Track Club collect medals at B.C. Athletics Jamboree in Kamloops.

The Vernon Triple A Track Club sent three athletes to the B.C. Athletics Jamboree last weekend in Kamloops. Each one earned a medal from the provincial club championships.

Jared Sexsmith, a 15-year-old from Lumby, threw a personal best 39.11 metres in the javelin to place fifth. His 1.75m in the high jump was good enough for a silver medal.

Fulton’s Joey Kohut, 15, ran three events in the blistering heat. He was fifth in the 1,200 (3:35.18) and 800 (2:13.05), and collected bronze in the 2,000 in 6:16.05.

Armstrong’s Tyra Gilbert, 17, ran a personal best 14.80 in 100 hurdle heats. She bettered that by 0.20 seconds in the final to secure bronze.

Gilbert and Sexsmith will compete at the Legion National Youth Championships, Aug. 9-11, in Langley.

Every year in August, the Royal Canadian Legion, in partnership with Athletics Canada, sponsors nationals for athletes between the ages of 14 and 17.
