Two of the best B.C. high school senior girls AAA volleyball teams usually try to block out the other.
But on Wednesday the Vernon Panthers and Seaton Sonics will again block out cancer.
The annual Block Out Cancer volleyball match between the crosstown rivals will go Nov. 22 at 5:30 p.m. at W.L. Seaton Secondary.
It’s the 10th year of the game where wearing pink is encouraged and money is raised for the Canadian Cancer Society.
An extra special item for this year’s contest: both teams have been ranked No. 1 in B.C. at some point this season, and as late as Nov. 9, Vernon was seeded No. 2 in the province, just ahead of the third-ranked Sonics.
The Panthers host the Okanagan AAA championships this weekend, so there is a possibility the two schools could meet in Saturday’s final prior to the fundraiser.
VSS is looking for revenge after the Sonics beat the hosts in the final of the Panthers’ recent eight-team senior girls tournament.
Originally hosted by the VSS Jr. Girls’ volleyball team as the Pink Panther match to create breast cancer awareness, the event has evolved into the Block Out Breast Cancer game hosted by members of the Seaton senior girls team.
“There will be a bake sale and door prizes with entry by donation. Doors open at 5 p.m. at Seaton on Nov. 22,” said Seaton player and event co-organizer Evelie Colclough. “Fans are encouraged to wear pink.”
