“It’s nice to have you back in the Big Leagues!”

That’s what Chicago Cubs broadcaster Jim Deshaies yelled as Prince George native and Kelowna Secondary School graduate Jared Young hit his first career MLB home run into the right field seats at the iconic Wrigley Field on Wednesday, June 28.

The 27-year-old was just called up to Chicago on Tuesday in a series of roster moves. In his first big league plate appearance of the season, he turned on a 94 mph inside fastball, in an 0-2 count, off of Philadelphia Phillies ace Aaron Nola to get the Cubs on the board. The home run travelled 425 feet, meaning it would’ve been a home run in every Major League ballpark, and came off the bat at 109.4 mph.

In two games since being called up, he’s batting .333 (2/6) with the home run, a triple, and two RBIs.

Young, the former Okanagan Athletic, has now appeared in eight games in his career and is batting .280 (7/25) with four extra base hits.
