Smokies shut down Vipers

The Trail Smoke Eaters shut out the visiting Vernon Vipers 3-0 Saturday night.

Lyndon Stanwood made 33 saves for his first BCHL shutout and the Trail Smoke Eaters scored twice on the power play to defeat the Vernon Vipers 3-0 before 1,100 fans Saturday night at Cominco Arena.

Chicago product Luke Sandler, whom the Smokies recently acquired in a trade with the Cowichan Valley Capitals, scored 1:41 into the first period.

Scott Davidson supplied the insurance goal, his first in the BCHL, on the man advantage later in the first, and Brent Baltus added another in the third.

Vernon outshot Trail 23-13 over the final 40 minutes but couldn’t solve Stanwood. Rookie Joe Young took the loss.

The Smokies (4-5) moved into second place in the Interior Division, while the Vipers slipped to fifth at 2-3-0-2. Vernon visits the first-place Penticton Vees (7-1) Friday night before entertaining the fourth-place West Kelowna Warriors (3-2-0-1) Saturday night at Wesbild Centre.
