Vernon Vipers miss BCHL playoffs

The Vernon Vipers miss the B.C. Hockey League playoffs after 4-2 loss to Chilliwack Chiefs Tuesday night at Prospera Centre.

For the first time since the 2000-01 season, the Vernon Vipers will not be in the B.C. Hockey League playoffs.

Tuesday night at Prospera Centre, the Vipers bowed 4-2 to the Chilliwack Chiefs, the same team they were chasing for the fourth and final Interior Conference berth. All the Chiefs needed was a tie or a win to clinch, and netminder Mitch Gillam made sure they got it, recording 47 saves to earn first star.

After a scoreless first period, Alexandre Perron put the Chiefs on the board 3:51 into the second frame with a powerplay goal. Trevor Hills made it 2-0 just over a minute later.

Vernon replied later in the second with a man-advantage goal by Adam Tambellini at 10:16, followed by a Darren Nowick snipe at 14:06.

David Thompson recorded the winner 5:13 into the third period, and Josh Hansen added an insurance marker with 18 seconds to play.
