Vipers advance to Interior final

John Knisley fires shorthanded winner as Vernon Vipers eliminate Westside Warriors in Game 6.

The Vernon Vipers put their special teams to work Tuesday night at Royal LePage Place, brushing back the Westside Warriors 2-1 in Game 6 of their B.C. Hockey League Interior Conference semifinal series.

Marcus Basara scored five minutes into the game on a powerplay, assisted by Dylan Walchuk and Mike Zalewski.

Max French equalized for the Warriors in the second period, but John Knisley pocketed the winner with a shorthanded strike at 12:41 of the third period to eliminate the Warriors in front of 1,167 fans.

Viper netminder Kirby Halcrow recorded 24 saves for the win, while Cole Holowenko made 15 stops for Westside. With starting netminder Kevin Boyle injured, Coldstream’s Conor Barrie was called up from the KIJHL Kelowna Chiefs to back up Holowenko.

The Vipers will meet the Salmon Arm SilverBacks in the Interior final, starting with Games 1 and 2 going Friday and Saturday night respectively at Wesbild Centre.
