The Vernon Vipers are one win away from creating junior A hockey history.
Bryce Kakoske collected goals in the first and second period as the Vipers grounded the Wellington Dukes of Ontario 4-1 in the semifinals of the Royal Bank Cup championships Saturday afternoon in Camrose.
Vernon will face the winner of the other semifinal between the tournament host Camrose Kodiaks and Pembroke Lumber Kings that went Saturday night. A win in Sunday’s gold-medal game (5 p.m. PT) would give the Snakes an unprecedented national threepeat.
Dukes defenceman Elliott Richardson, a former Viper, netted Wellington’s lone goal with a third-period powerplay, but Vernon closed out the game with goals by Patrick McGillis and David Robinson.
The Vipers peppered netminder Jordan Ruby with 39 shots, while Kirby Halcrow recorded 22 stops for the win.
