Round one of training Canada’s youth in sea, army and air activities has signed off with success.

The Graduation Parade for the first intake of General Training Cadets took place Friday morning at the Vernon Cadet Training Centre at the Vernon Army Camp with 177 youth in Charlie Company on Sicily Square.

The cadet program is a national program for young Canadians aged 12 to 18 who are interested in participating in a variety of fun, challenging and rewarding activities while learning about the sea, army and air activities of the Canadian Armed Forces.

Cadets enrolled in the General Training Course stay for two weeks. The youngest cadets, usually 12 or 13 years old, enrolled in the General Training Course are attending their first summer session, and they will learn the skills necessary to successfully function in a summer training environment, including, for many, their first experience in community living.

They will take part in an overnight field training exercise, learn marksmanship skills with the air rifle, compete in a summer biathlon, and challenge the mini-confidence course.

Cadets make valuable contributions to Canadian society on a daily basis in terms of environmental, citizenship and community-based activities. Cadets also learn valuable life skills such as teamwork, leadership, and citizenship.
