The Lumby Lions Club is quick to award those dedicated to their community.

This year, Rona Nikirk was named the Lumby Lions Citizen of the Year for her participation in the community.

“That was pretty thrilling,” said the 80-year-old who was profiled during the recent Lumby Days parade.

She has been involved in numerous activities, including Lumby and Cherryville Brownies, the Lumby Queen’s Committee, the Royal Canadian Legion Ladies Auxiliary and the Lumby Golf Club.

Every Thursday, Nikirk also volunteers her time during the Lumby Meals for Wheels program at the Old Age Pensioners Hall. There, she does various tasks to prep for meals, like cutting up potatoes.

She was surprised when she discovered she received an award.

“I thought, you gotta be kidding me.”

The award is now nestled in her home in Lumby.

“It’s a nice plaque. It’s on the wall by my china cabinet,” she said.

The Lumby Lions Citizen of the Year award is presented to an individual who shows dedication and service to the community.

Nikirk has been volunteering for a very long time, said Bev Lawrence, public relations co-ordinator for the Lumby Lions.

Nominees are submitted to a committee, which decides the winner.

The Lumby Lions Club has been awarding citizens since 1980.
