The Spallumcheen Armstrong Food Initiative Society (SAFIS) is in the habit of sharing food.

But the group formerly known as the Armstrong Food Initiative Society also likes to share good news.

The 15th year of SAFIS’ produce sharing program was a smash.

This is a program where local growers generously donate any excess produce to the volunteers at the shed behind the caboose on Smith Drive in Armstrong. Anyone who wants to share in the bounty comes to pick it up.

“We have had a very successful season compared to last year,” said the society in a release.

An average of 36 people came each Monday from July 10 to Oct. 2, and an average of nearly 220 pounds of produce was brought to share.

The society had some big donations of corn in mid-August, and squash and pumpkins were used for Interior Provincial Exhibition (IPE) decorations.

“We were open Monday night from 5 to 7 which made it easier for people who work to participate,” said the society. “We would like to thank so much all the growers who shared their produce with the community, and to all the people who showed up to enjoy it.”
