North Okanagan students craft creative newspaper ads

Alexander Shupe’s drawing was chosen as the winner of The Morning Star’s Design-a-Cover contest

The Vernon Morning Star’s April 18 newspaper was filled with eye-catching ads drawn up by local elementary students, and one student’s drawing earned his class a delicious prize.

Local students were tasked with drawing an ad for the newspaper, and one drawing was chosen as the cover for the design-an-ad section. Alexander Shupe of Coldstream Elementary was named the winner of the contest for his education-themed drawing. His reward was an A&W burger lunch for himself and all of his classmates.

More than 660 kids drew ads for advertisers to choose from this year. Advertisers such as A&W had over 40 submissions.

Advertisers told The Morning Star that the ads the students created were “fabulous,” and that it was a great way to get their message out there.

“The project is a keeper and has a long shelf life,” said Morning Star publisher Keith Currie. “It’s a learning experience for the kids – they learn about newspapers and what goes into building an ad to get the right message out there.

“The lunch with the winners of the Design-the-Cover contest was an enjoyable time,” said Currie, who discussed with the kids how the paper is put together and where it is delivered.

“The winner of the contest is treated like royalty at the lunch and is provided copies to autograph for their class. It’s a fun and rewarding time,” Currie said.

Keep an eye out for next year’s contest.
