A Vernon man has won a prestigious award for his above-and-beyond volunteerism.

The Government of Canada has released the winners of its Volunteer Awards, and Norm Crerar is the recipient for B.C. under the community leader category.

Crerar is the president and executive producer of the Okanagan Military Tattoo, and plays a vital role in ensuring the large event that annually takes over Kal Tire Place runs smoothly.

Under Crerar’s leadership, the Tattoo has grown into a highly anticipated cultural event that fosters civic pride and brings people together, the Okanagan Military Tattoo Society said, adding that his passion for arts and culture as a way of strengthening the community has made him “a beloved figure” in the area.

“I am overwhelmed with happiness and pride, not only for this recognition but for the unwavering support of my family, friends, and all partners who have stood by me in this journey,” Crerar said.

An awards ceremony will take place in Ottawa on April 15, marking the 10th anniversary of Canada’s Volunteer Awards.

The awards recognize community leaders, not-for-profit organizations, social enterprises and businesses that have helped improve the lives of others in their communities.

Twenty regional awards and one national award were given out this year. The winner of this year’s national award is Rahul Singh.
