Participants talk snow sculpting 101
It may have been cold–it may have been damp, but that didn’t stop these hearty souls from participating in the BC Championship Snow Sculpture competition last weekend at SilverStar Mountain Resort near Vernon.
Under the theme, Wonderland, this year’s group of contestants were asked to create their Wonderland fantasy using only water and snow.
The competition draws snow carving teams from around the world, and each team is given two days and two nights to complete their works of art.
Teams began at 10 a.m. Friday morning, starting with enormous blocks of snow that have been cured during the week. Spectators watched the huge snow carvings come to life Friday and Saturday, with final judging taking place on Sunday morning.
First place goes to team Snow FX for their creation Bot and Paid….FOUR by David Durault, Bruce Waugh and Roger Chaisson of North Vancouver, Langley and Nanaimo. Their entry was accompanied by the following:
“Wonders of the Whirled
Outcase from the media.
Master of the Oh cult
Will that be.
Un, Trump, or the two?”
Second place is awarded to The Three Amigos for My Cup Runneth Over by Alex Avelino, Serjio Santos and Brenardo Andrade e Castro - all from Nelson.
“The Cup that holds, a love so true, the cup that we share, me and you.”
Another Nelson team, Chaos, Eh? took third place for Drink Me - by Stevennina Drassinourer, Carter Balzer and Matt Holman.
“Our sculpture depicts a classic scene from the story of Alice in Wonderland. On a table, appears cake and a drink labelled “Eat Me” and “Drink Me.” Alice does, and begins to shrink to 10” tall, and grows until she fills the entire room. A very late rabbit looks on from around a corner.”
