The Vernon School District’s Snowsports Academy is wrapping up its second year with spring conditioning after a successful winter.

Snowsports Academy helps young athletes train to compete at top levels of their sport and maintain strong academics.

“When the people in our community come together to create opportunities for students to excel in the sport (or) activity they love... it is something to be celebrated.

Goals can be achieved with vision, planning and commitment,” said Karen Fenske, Investors Group consultant.

Many Snowsports athletes are climbing the ranks to provincial and national teams.

Local students who excel at alpine, Nordic and freestyle skiing spent two extra weekday-training sessions on the snow during the winter season and benefited from classroom and virtual learning blocks throughout the week.

During spring and fall, athletes do cross-training activities that include: in-line skating, mountain biking, trampoline training and strength training.

The training keeps athletes competition-ready so they can make the most of the snow at Silver Star.

A handful of individuals facilitated the development of the program with: Sovereign Lake Nordic Centre, Vernon Ski Club, Silver Style Freestyle Club, Silver Star Mountain Resort and the Vernon School District.

Extra training time during the school day continues to be the cornerstone to the academy athlete success.

Investors Group Financial Services presented the Snowsports Academy with $1,000.
