Speediest breeds around take to the track

Lavington hosts the Whippet Club of British Columbia’s annual spring trials this Saturday and Sunday.

The races are going to the dogs, quite literally.

Lavington hosts the Whippet Club of British Columbia’s annual spring trials this Saturday and Sunday.

The two-day event attracts some of the speediest breeds from around B.C. and as far away as Edmonton.

“It’s the first trial of the season in B.C.,” said Verena von Eichborn, local organizer.

Along with the approximately 30 dogs known for their speeds (including Afghan, basenji, greyhound and whippet), all breeds will have a chance to take to the course.

“We will have our every dog run as an extra on Saturday,” said von Eichborn. “Dogs of all makes and models can come.”

There is limited space for the all-breed run Saturday so those interested in registering their dogs to try out should contact von Eichborn ahead of time at 250-260-3109.

Anyone interested in checking out the races is also welcome to come out.

“Visitors are always welcome with well-behaved dogs on a leash,” said von Eichborn.

The Berlin Friend and Family Jam and Jelly sale will also be on site, which raises funds to help cover the expenses of hosting the trials.
