Leaving the safety of high school and heading to university can be intimidating, but some helpful tips can create smooth transition.

The Student Transition Enrichment Project Society will host a presentation for students and their parents Wednesday at Kalamalka Secondary School

“The personal experiences that a few of my classmates and I have recently had are extremely beneficial to share with prospective post-secondary students,” said Samantha Bienias, who is attending Queen’s University and a Kalamalka Secondary graduate.

“In addition to providing relevant and important information, we expect to encourage more students from our community to attend post-secondary education.”

In 2015, about 50 people from local secondary schools attended the presentation.

“The goal this year is to present the same seminar for the next round of ambitious students hoping to attend university,” said Bienias.

Along with Bienias, the other speakers are Emma Levorson, from Mount Royal University, Alex Lukey, from the University of B.C. Okanagan, and Mairead Raupach, with UBC.

“We have chosen to emphasize certain aspects of university that we wish we would have known more about before entering university,” said Bienias.

They include the work load and how to balance time.

“We will talk about what to expect with living in residence, with a roommate or without, participating in frosh week, exam week and using campus resources,” said Bienias.

“There is also the importance of feeling like you’re a part of the school — volunteering, clubs, intramural sports, watching sports and attending events and guest lectures.”

Bienias says these topics can play a role in what school a student attends.

The presentation is directed towards Grade 10 to 12 students, as well as their parents, and it will be held at the Kalamalka Secondary School gym at 7 p.m.
