Change makers in Kelowna are being given a platform to have their thoughts, ideas and passions heard through the Arts for Social Change Project.

Youth aged 5-25 are encouraged to submit any kind of art project that aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, which aim to create a healthy future for the planet, by Jan. 31.

“I want the youth change makers of the Okanagan to take this opportunity and run with it,” said Project coordinator, Jamie Stevens.

Artists of all modalities are invited to submit work that sparks conversation, evokes thought and inspires change. Art of all kind will be accepted for consideration.

Any youth or team of youth can submit a piece of art. “the project celebrates the power of expression over perfection,” said Stevens.

“It’s not about technical skills or traditional measures of artistic talent; rather, the project seeks art that speaks, that conveys a message.”

Stevens said that she wants people to create art derived from passion.

“Let’s turn your thoughts into a conversation and your concerns into action… This is your chance to be heard in the community,” said Stevens.

The selected pieces will be curated into exhibits this spring at the The Rotary Centre for the Arts, Kelowna Innovation Centre, Okanagan Regional Libraries, and local businesses as well as on social media.

Additionally, some pieces will be displayed at the Sustainability and Art Fair on February 22, at the Rotary Center for the Arts.

The deadline for submission is Jan. 31.

For more information on submission guidelines and to register, head to the Arts for Social Change webpage at sustainabledevelopmentchallenge.com or email the coordinator at afsccoordinator@gmail.com.

Funding for this project has been provided by the City of Kelowna, the BC Council for International Cooperation, and Canadian Heritage.
